Best Places to Visit in Charleston

Published: May 27, 2023 Modified: May 28, 2023 by Karen Kelly This post may contain affiliate links.

If you're looking for a vacation destination brimming with charm, history, and of course, incredible food, look no further than the jewel of the south - Charleston. Charleston is consistently ranked one of the best places to visit in the U.S., and this year it was voted the second-best place in the U.S. for foodies. Whether you're looking to indulge in the finest Lowcountry cuisine or a history buff eager to explore the rich heritage of this town, this is the perfect spot. Here are some of my favorite things to do in Charleston.

    Stay in a Quaint Hotel

When it comes to choosing a hotel in Charleston, location is everything! And what better location to base yourself in than the iconic King Street? If you're looking for the ultimate convenience, then The Fulton Lane Inn is perfect. Step out of your room, and you'll find yourself in the heart of all the action, steps away from the city's best restaurants, shopping, the Public Market, and even the South Carolina Aquarium. But it's not just the location that sets this hotel apart - from the moment you arrive, you'll be swept away by its luxurious rooms and top-notch service.

Caution, shopaholics! If you like retail therapy, you could get carried away. King Street has all the exclusive spots like Louis Vuitton and Gucci, but it's also home to a plethora of hidden gems, including one-of-a-kind gift shops, jewelry boutiques, and clothing stores that offer unique finds and stylish pieces that are sure to turn heads.

    Enjoy a Delicious Breakfast

Charleston is a mecca for foodies and a paradise for the taste buds! The culinary scene is so vibrant and diverse that planning your meals ahead of time is an absolute must if you want to indulge in everything this city offers. We loved our breakfast at The Daily, and all of their dishes are prepared thoughtfully with quality ingredients put together in creative ways. You will find healthy juices, strong coffee, breakfast toast, fresh bread, eggs, pastries, smoothies, wine, and snacks to go. Trust me; you won't want to miss out on this foodie haven!

    Explore!

Walk, walk, walk! Charleston is a feast for the eyes, from its gorgeous pastel houses to its secret gardens tucked away in corners—no wonder it's a walker's paradise, with sites to see in every direction. Don't miss the architectural marvels of the Charleston City Hall, the Dock Street Theatre, and the Old Exchange Building, each telling a unique story of the city's rich history. And for a breath of fresh air, White Point Garden is a must-visit, with its stunning waterfront views and lush greenery.

    Take a Carriage Tour

Are you looking for a unique way to immerse yourself in the rich history of Charleston? Hop aboard a delightful carriage tour and prepare to be transported back in time! From the city's pivotal role in the Civil War to its status as the beloved "Holy City," your expert guide will regale you with fascinating tales and insights into the city's fascinating 300-year history. So sit back, relax, and let the beauty of Charleston unfold before your very eyes!

    Visit the Charleston City Market

Step into the vibrant heart of Charleston at the historic Charleston City Market - the most popular attraction in the area! Established in the 1790's, it is one of the oldest city markets in the United States. Wander through this bustling hub of local commerce and discover a treasure trove of handmade sweetgrass baskets, local art, jewelry, delectable food, and even stylish clothing and shoes!

    Have Dinner Out

Prepare your taste buds for a culinary adventure like no other in Charleston because it's a city that knows how to do dining right! One highlight was Mesu, a Mexican and Asian fusion eatery serving a tantalizing blend of tacos and sushi in the same meal. For a truly unforgettable dining experience, head to Rue De Jean or Iron Rose, where you'll be treated to upscale cuisine and impeccable service that will make you feel like royalty.

Stroll Through Second Sunday on King Street

Looking for a lively and vibrant event that captures the essence of historic downtown Charleston? Look no further than the 2nd Sunday on King Street; the premier monthly event takes place year-round. This vehicle-free, pedestrian-only afternoon invites visitors and locals alike to stroll, shop, and dine along Charleston's iconic main street.

    Visit the South Carolina Aquarium

Don't miss the South Carolina Aquarium overlooking the picturesque Charleston Harbor. Their state-of-the-art aquarium boasts nearly 5,000 fascinating creatures from around the globe. From majestic sea turtles to colorful coral reefs, there's no shortage of incredible sights to explore and learn about. The sea turtle care center was our favorite, and it was so fun to see how they carefully nurse them back to health.

Don't miss this beauty! Pineapple Fountain at Waterfront Park is a lovely spot with eight acres of spectacular fountains, spacious lawns, and intimate garden rooms, along with picnic tables and wooden swings. Whether you're looking to snap that perfect Instagram shot, enjoy a romantic picnic with your loved one, or simply bask in the soothing ambiance of this breathtaking oasis, Waterfront Park has something for everyone.
