McDonald’s has franchises all over the globe, and its logo is instantly recognizable to billions of people worldwide. The Big Mac is the company’s signature sandwich in the United States and elsewhere. With two all-beef patties, pickles, shredded lettuce, a slice of American cheese, and Big Mac sauce, all served with a sesame seed bun, it satisfies the appetite of almost anyone.
Depending on your U.S. state, you’ll pay more or less for your Big Mac, from $3.91 to $5.31. The cheapest Big Macs tend to be in the Deep South and the Midwest, with the most expensive ones being in coastal states and the Northeast.
Let’s look at the 15 states with the most expensive Big Macs.
Hawaii
Out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, just about everything is more expensive in the Aloha State because of transport. It’s no surprise that Big Macs are most expensive there: $5.31 apiece.
New York
The high cost of living in New York City and its surrounding areas puts the Empire State at #2 when it comes to the most expensive Big Macs. They’ll run you $5.23 there.
New Jersey
Being so close to New York and heavily urbanized as well makes New Jersey check-in at #3 on our list. A Big Mac will cost you $5.19 there.
California
The Golden State is one of the most beautiful in the country, and it’s also one of the most expensive. A Big Mac is no exception, with a price of $5.11.
Maryland
With Baltimore, a lot of tech companies, and an abundance of government contractors, business is booming in Maryland, and the cost of living is relatively high. You can see that reflected in the $5.03 cost for a Big Mac in the state.
Connecticut
Connecticut has always been a pricey place to live in largely due to its proximity to New York City and that many wealthy people who work there choose to live in Connecticut. A Big Mac is currently $4.95, but at least we’re under $5 now!
Alaska
Like Hawaii, Alaska presents a lot of logistical challenges and costs when it comes to providing goods and services. It’s an expensive state to live in, and a Big Mac will set you back $4.87 in the Last Frontier.
Massachusetts
The Bay State is an attractive place to live, work, and play; higher prices are part of that. Expect a Big Mac there to run you $4.87.
New Hampshire
In the Granite State, a Big Mac is $4.83, but you might not notice it too much. This small state is packed with big scenery from mountains, waterfalls, beaches, stunning fall colors, and more. They’ll command a lot more of your attention!
Virginia
Like its neighbor Maryland, Virginia has seen tremendous business and population growth in recent decades due to tech growth and the federal government's presence. $4.67 is what you’ll pay for a Big Mac in the Old Dominion State.
Washington
$4.67 is the price for a Big Mac in the crown jewel of the Pacific Northwest. Explosive growth in tech and other businesses has led to a surge in population and prices.
Delaware
In the smallest state, you’ll pay one of the bigger prices for a Big Mac. It’ll cost you $4.63 at a McDonald’s there.
Colorado
Mountains aren’t the only things that are high in the Rocky Mountain state. Tourism, outdoor recreation, and a strong job market have sent prices and population up there, where a Big Mac is $4.59.
Vermont
Like the Rocky Mountain State, the Green Mountain State has a $4.59 price for a Big Mac. You might not mind it so much as you take in all the gorgeous scenery there.
Illinois
Rounding out the list is Illinois, where, according to our source, a Big Mac is $4.55. This is in large part due to the high cost of living in and around Chicago.
