There’s one question I get asked a lot: Is Dunkin Donuts gluten free? In this guide, I’ll answer and also share everything you need to know about Dunkin’ Donuts gluten free menu.
This article is based on the latest 2023 Dunkin Donuts Allergen Guide to bring you the most up-to-date information. But, with that being said, I encourage you to do your own research to always verify that a product or food item is going to be safe for you.
Dunkin first tried to introduce gluten-free items back in 2012, and since then there have been quite a few changes along the way. So, in this article, I’ll cover all of it to give you the most updated information.
Dunkin Donuts History
If you're a fan of coffee and donuts, you're probably familiar with Dunkin' Donuts. But did you know that this beloved brand has a rich history that dates back to the 1940s?
In 1948, William Rosenberg opened a restaurant in Quincy, Massachusetts, called "Open Kettle," where he served coffee and donuts. Rosenberg noticed that these two items were the most popular, so he decided to focus on them. In 1950, "Open Kettle" was renamed "Dunkin Donuts," and the rest is history.
Over the years, Dunkin Donuts expanded its menu to include bagels, muffins, and a variety of beverages. Today, it's one of the largest coffee and baked goods chains in the world, with more than 13,200 locations in 40 countries.
Is Dunkin Donuts Gluten Free?
I've got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is, most of Dunkin Donuts' menu is not gluten free. This includes their famous donuts, muffins, and most of their sandwiches. The dough used in these items contains wheat, which is a source of gluten.
The good news, however, is that Dunkin Donuts does offer some gluten-free options. These include their hash browns, oatmeal, and most of their drinks.
When were Gluten-Free Items First Introduced at Dunkin Donuts?
Dunkin' tested a gluten-free cinnamon sugar donut and a gluten-free blueberry muffin in selected stores back in 2012. The restaurant chain stated that by the end of 2013, it intended to distribute these delicious treats across the nation.
The GFCO verified the gluten-free cinnamon sugar donut and the gluten-free blueberry muffin as gluten-free, and both were manufactured and packed in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
Unfortunately, Dunkin' Donuts removed the bakery items not long after they were introduced, and there isn't enough information as to the reasons behind this change.
Dunkin’ Donuts Gluten Free Fudge Brownie
While the gluten-free donut and muffin didn't take off, Dunkin' Donuts wasn't done dabbling in the gluten-free world.
Dunkin' Donuts introduced another gluten-free bakery item in 2018, an individually wrapped gluten-free brownie certified gluten-free by the GFCO.
Unfortunately, Dunkin' Donuts has discontinued this gluten-free bakery item yet again with little notice or explanation.
In a tweet in January 2019, the company confirmed that the gluten-free brownies were only available for a limited time while supplies lasted, and that the company had no plans to bring this item back.
Unfortunately, as of December 2023, Dunkin’ does not offer any gluten-free bakery items.
