When seeing the world, most savvy travelers know that not all cities are created equal. While some locations are worth your travel dollars, others aren't worth visiting. Recently, men and women of all ages met in an online discussion to reveal a handful of overrated cities that, quite frankly, don't live up to their reputations as world-class destinations.
1. New York City, New York
While the city boasts over 65 million visitors annually, a vocal minority believe the Big Apple is completely overhyped and not worth including on anybody's travel itinerary. "New York doesn't appreciate its history; it wipes it off the map to make overpriced studio apartments and chic restaurants," argues one frequent flier. "As far as things to do and see, it's got a ton of gaudiness, but most of it is difficult to navigate, overly expensive, and more pomp than substance."
2. Miami, Florida
This iconic South Florida city is a must-visit for one specific type of person: The partier! Miami is home to some of the hottest clubs and bars in the world, and combined with its ideal climate and picturesque beaches, it's a destination for anyone looking to live it up in 2023. Unfortunately, Miami is a stay-away for anybody who isn't interested in partying until the wee hours of the morning. The city is crowded, loud, and expensive, with its culture coming across as unappealing to many casual travelers.
3. Beijing, China
Nobody likes feeling uncomfortable and unsafe when exploring an unfamiliar city. Travelers frequently cite Beijing as a destination that ultimately underwhelmed them. "I've traveled a fair bit around Asia, and Beijing is by far my least favorite Asian city," one man confesses. "Some of the historical sites were interesting, but the city itself is filthy and full of scam artists who will hound you for blocks." I don't care how historic a place is; dirty city streets are a total turnoff!
4. Nashville, Tennessee
Don't get me wrong, Nashville is one of the most iconic cities in the United States, and its live music scene is world-famous. However, many travelers say the shine has recently worn off the Music City. While it's a haven for musicians, Nashville also attracts amateur drinkers and partiers who treat the city with as little respect as possible. Loud hotel stays, overcrowded bars, and expensive food and drinks are hallmarks of Nashville in 2023, making it a less enticing destination for budget-minded travelers.
5. Cairo, Egypt
As the home of many breathtaking pyramids, it shouldn't surprise anyone that millions visit Cairo annually. Unfortunately, the city's reputation as being unsafe toward people, especially women, is growing at an alarming pace. Scam artists and disrespectful residents are expected in Cairo, causing countless women to complain about the endless catcalling and unwanted touching. In 2023, Cairo isn't a city women feel safe visiting; here's to hoping this historic town can clean up its act.
6. Austin, Texas
A decade ago, there arguably was no more attractive city you could visit than Austin. Unfortunately, many believe Austin's gentrification has ruined the town in more ways than one. "The quirky Austin you've heard about has been bulldozed to make way for generic high rises," one resident explains. "The clientele that lives here now are the worst. The live music capital of the world? Not anymore, since musicians are priced out of living in the area. It all makes me sad." The city used to proudly proclaim, "Keep Austin weird." Nowadays, it sounds like they should change their slogan to "Keep Austin affordable for normal people."
7. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
While it's one of the most architecturally impressive cities in the world, the jury is out on Dubai. According to countless travelers, it's a very shallow and culture-deprived city. In Dubai's race to be crowned the most modern city on the planet, they've bulldozed nearly all green space in favor of endless skyscrapers and condominiums. While the city is a wonder to gaze upon, it's not walkable, resulting in a decidedly subpar visiting experience for anyone who may have been excited to explore this unique metropolis.
8. Berlin, Germany
Germany is home to some of the most-visited cities in the world. Towns like Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg attract millions of visitors annually. According to one recent traveler, Berlin's residents are doing their city a significant disservice by being too pretentious about its nightlife. "Don't get me wrong, it has some nice parts, and it's got a lot going on. What puts me off is the kind of posey, pretentious people who idolize the place as the coolest city in the world and get all hung up on about getting into certain nightclubs." This isn't the first time I've heard Berliners being pretentious about their town.
9. Orlando, Florida
Make no mistake about it: Orlando is the most Disney-centric city in the world, so it turns many visitors off. Unless you enjoy spending untold amounts of money and hours in theme parks with thousands of your closest friends, I'd advise visiting anywhere other than Orlando. Orlando was designed from the ground up for one sole purpose: To extract as much money from unsuspecting tourists as possible! It's astonishing how many people visit annually, but that's the allure of Mickey Mouse.
10. Honolulu, Hawaii
Although it's located in arguably the most beautiful state in the U.S., Honolulu has devolved into a tourist attraction on steroids. In 2023, it's a city that pales compared to other towns in Hawaii. "Honolulu was overpriced, the beaches weren't that nice, homeless people were everywhere, and it seemed like they tried to concrete over paradise and turn it into a giant outdoor shopping mall," reports one woman. Instead of Honolulu, consider smaller cities on Maui or Kauai; they're world-class in every sense of the word!
