Spooky scenes, scary movie marathons, begging strangers for food, what’s not to like about Halloween? Turns out… a LOT! Halloween is filled with real danger and panic triggers. Not to mention the stupid amount of money people are expected to spend on candy and costumes. Here's what a few folks on Reddit think about Halloween.
Halloween is a Trashy Night
There’s always a huge mess waiting when the sun rises on November 1. Not just candy wrappers, half-eaten candy apples, and discarded costume parts… Halloween invites vandalism. It’s nearly impossible to get toilet paper out of trees and bushes once the morning dew sets in. Throwing raw eggs on houses or vehicles is not a “trick” it’s a crime! Hate it.
Phobias
There are just so many ways to get triggered during Halloween. People who panic at the thought of spiders, snakes, blood, or the dark are going to hate Halloween. Combine all that with anxiety triggered by being around a lot of people (with or without masks), and it’s easy to see why Halloween might be the most hated holiday of the year.
No One Hates Halloween More Than Pets
Animals don’t like to be stuffed into fabric. (Okay, Becky, we’ll believe your Morkie-poo loves being dressed like a flower.) If you make your cat wear bat wings or a floppy hat… you deserve whatever they do to you on Halloween night.
The Boos and Booze
Take people experiencing social anxiety and add a lot of alcohol. That’s the Halloween recipe for a spike in drunk driving, crippling hangovers, and tons of visits to urgent care or the E.R. It is deadly serious, and Halloween high jinks are too often fueled by alcohol, drugs, and terrible decision-making.
Too Much IRL
The ghosties and ghoulies and things that go bump in the night are straight-up scary. A lot of people cannot even with any thoughts of scary characters. Even though there are legions of Mattel’s “it girl” Barbie around this year,… still not KENOUGH to convert hardcore Halloween haters.
“You Never Know What You’re Inviting In”
There are those who hate Halloween because there are so many opportunities to get it wrong and invite something truly terrifying. Decorations, Halloween costumes, and make-up could result in hitting on real rituals and scaring up a real ghost (or worse). Forget about messing around with an Ouija board. Your mom may have been one hundo when she warned against messing with the supernatural… you just never know!
I Smell (Rude) Children
The real horror can be the rug rats that show up at the door looking for candy. As much candy as they can possibly grab in their sticky hands as you try to tell them calmly… “One piece each kid.” OMG, they just don’t listen. And where are their parents??
Health and Money Concerns
You’re expected to spend a lot of money on big bags of candy, and it’s perfectly okay to gorge on pounds of sugar. Being a Halloween hater can actually save a bunch of money and a ton of calories! Forget peer pressure and enjoy saying no to Halloween traditions.
It’s Not Even a Holiday!
Halloween is mainly celebrated in the U.S. and Canada. Though its roots are in Europe in America today, it’s just a way to sell a whole lot of cheap candy and cheaper costume pieces. It really belongs in the category of a commercial event rather than a holiday. No wonder people hate it.
Halloween Is Just Plain Dangerous
Let us get this straight… on one night of the year, it is perfectly fine to approach strangers’ houses after dark and take candy from them. Ummmm… what utter crap! Add to that the emergency room visits from tripping over costumes or decorations, and you have every reason to hate Halloween.
It’s Become the Start of the Christmas Season
For some reason, retailers have decided that as soon as we can see Halloween on the calendar, it’s time to haul out all the Christmas goods. Look no further than your friends’ social media posts to understand how freaking annoying it is to jump the timeline for profit. No wonder a lot of people would rather skip Halloween!
It’s Too Loud
With the kids screaming and, the dogs barking, and the doorbell ringing. (and ringing and ringing… please make it stop) Halloween is a headache. No wonder we hate Halloween because we can’t opt out of the noisy disturbances that come every October 31st.
