10 Best Foods To Eat When You Feel Sick

Published: Aug 28, 2023 Modified: Aug 28, 2023 by Lynnia Shanley This post may contain affiliate links.

Catching a bug or a bad cold that won't disappear is no fun. Not knowing what foods help makes it even worse. Recently, an online community shared their go-to foods when feeling run down. Stock up on these pantry items that will have you feeling better in no time!

    1. Toast

It may be boring, but toast with some butter is an all-time favorite for those with a cold. An appetite tends to vanish when you're sick, so anything bland makes eating easier to stomach.

    2. Crackers

Like toast, crackers are an effortless choice when unwell. Avoid getting out of bed by keeping a cracker box on your nightstand! "I eat an entire sleeve of saltine crackers smashed up in a bowl of chicken noodle soup," shares a respondent.

    3. Soup

This food is an obvious choice, but soup is a classic option. Chicken noodle soup, pho, and even bone marrow are great to consume when you're unwell. One individual shares, "I eat chicken pho when I'm feeling under the weather — physically or mentally." The soup broth is packed with vital nutrients and vitamins that aid the body when you suffer from a cold or congestion. "Pho has always been my favorite; it's healthy, delicious, and adding sriracha helps clear up the sinuses," adds another.

    4. Rice

"My go-to is rice, which is good for digestion," volunteers one commenter. They continued to share, "The dish is pretty light and easy to make, especially if you have instant rice packets." Add some spicy curry on top for congestion, or eat it as is for stomach aches. It's an inexpensive food that goes a long way, especially when you're feverish.

    5. Yogurt

It may not be your first choice, but yogurt can feel like a treat when you're not ready to eat. Choose a plain yogurt or kefir that is easier to eat. Plus, you'll get added pro-biotics that will soothe your stomach.

    6. Tea

Herbal tea concoctions are known for their medicinal properties and have been around for centuries. "If you have insomnia, chamomile tea helps; try peppermint tea for cold and sinus infections. If you're feeling groggy and tired from your illness, green tea can help since it has caffeine and anti-inflammatory support, " a tea connoisseur offered.

    7. Protein Shakes

If you have the flu or stomach bug, the last thing you want is solid food. A protein shake can give your body the nutrients it needs without eating solid foods and keeps you hydrated. Remember that dehydration is expected with some ailments. It's important to keep the fluids constant. "Liquids are your best friends," assures one healthy person. If a protein shake still sounds like a lot, try fresh green or orange juice for extra vitamin C.

    8. Ginger

Listen up, ladies. Ginger can be a helpful ally against period-related cramps and nausea. Multiple women profess the benefits of the root in alleviating the pain. Boil fresh ginger in hot water to make tea, or add it to a broth and sip it slowly. If the raw ginger root is too powerful, grab ginger ale to get you back in action. The bubbly and satisfying drink is commonly paired with soup and crackers.

    9. Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup

The comfort of a gooey grilled cheese sandwich, matched with the creaminess of tomato soup, is a perfect combination that makes you feel better. A contributor mentions the advantages they get for stomach discomfort: "For me, cream of tomato soup made with milk really settles my stomach." The acidity and vitamins from tomatoes promote support in the body.

    10. Apple Sauce

When the flu lasts for multiple days, sugar-free or plain apple sauce is the best when you want to feel like you have something solid in you to survive the night. Who knew childhood foods would provide comfort when you're sick?
