While “Ok Boomer” is still a popular phrase with the younger crowd, we thought we’d end this drama once and for all. Here is a list, thanks to the people of Reddit, of what Boomers actually got right.
Rock and Roll
While this might not be a major thing, good music is good music. There is a reason classic rock is a thing, Boomer’s did it so right that we still listen to them today.
Being Offline
We don’t just mean that Boomers didn’t have cell phones for the majority of their lives, we mean that they still have “offline” hours in the 21st century. Today we can be reached basically 24/7. But maybe we don’t realize how overwhelming that really is.
Being Handy
We hear this one a lot, but it’s true. Boomers have a wide range of DIY experience and knowledge that helps them do anything from fixing a leaky sink to mending torn curtains.
Small Talk
While we might be talking to friends often, we usually aren’t learning about strangers. While most of us actively avoid the store clerk’s small talk attempt, we can always appreciate the Boomer who already knows their favorite color and mother’s name.
Free-Range Parenting
Thanks to the lack of internet, Boomers took on a more free-range approach to raising kids without the guilt. Their kids on Reddit certainly sing a lot of praise for being raised this way.
Negotiating
One Reddit comment said that they always bring their Boomer grandfather with them to buy a car because he’s just that good. We have to give them credit, they know how to haggle.
Fixing Instead of Buying
While the younger generations tend to jump on Amazon the moment something breaks, Boomers like to fix their items before buying new ones. This is definitely a good tip in this current economy.
Re-using Containers
We’ve all been given a container of whip cream by our grandmother that turned out to hold delicious soup. Boomers are definitely the queens of reusing those “single-use” plastic containers.
All-In-One Items
Reddit pointed out the Boomer trend to make everything all in one. One comment fondly remembered their parent's record-playing TV with record storage, a liquor cabinet, and a lamp!
Making Gen-X
Perhaps a more tongue-in-cheek answer, but one Reddit likes a lot. Boomers' greatest accomplishment was making them of course.
Radical Change
Now on to a more serious answer. Reddit pointed out that a lot of the social and political change we appreciate now started with Boomers. Many groups today got their start in the 60s with the Civil Rights movement.
Word of Mouth
One Reddit comment mentioned how their Boomer parents trust word-of-mouth recommendations over Google reviews. While we love the start system, they said they have never been steered wrong by simply asking friends who they recommend. Read more on this Reddit thread!
