Here, a food crime isn’t something like shoplifting at the grocery store. It isn’t misrepresenting the ingredients in a food you’ve prepared or sold or selling food that’s been tampered with. Rather, it’s some type of gross misuse of food, at least in the eyes of many people.
We looked into what screams “food crime” to people and got some interesting results from some that didn’t surprise us at all to others we never would have guessed. As always, if you see something you like listed here, please don’t take offense; this is just for fun!
Wasting Food
Throwing leftovers into the trash, destroying food for fun, and letting food go bad are examples of wasting food that bother a lot of people. They feel especially strongly about wasted meat since it came from an animal that once was alive.
Food for Display Only
This is a subcategory of wasted food, but it irritates enough people to get its own mention. A couple examples: demo dishes in restaurants and cooking videos showing food that’s prepared but not eaten.
Drowning Your Food in Condiments
Maybe you’re old enough to remember the “Don’t Drown Your Food” video in the 1980s. Even if you aren’t, you’ve probably heard the advice not to overdo salad dressing, ketchup, and other condiments so that they override the taste of everything else.
Drowning Ice Cream in Toppings
Another entry in the drowning category. Some people contend that ice cream is too good to bury it under a lake of chocolate syrup or a mountain of sprinkles.
Too Much Sugar or Icing on Desserts and Pastries
Sometimes sweet is too sweet and it takes away from enjoying a dessert. This is why you often see people scraping icing off cake.
Overdoing the Cheese
A lot of people love cheese, and it’s vital to many recipes. However, if you go overboard, you end up with a gooey mess that most people don’t enjoy.
“Raw” Tortillas
These are tortillas eaten straight from the package, and they’re bland and dry that way. You’re supposed to wrap them in a damp paper towel and warm them up before filling and eating them.
Ketchup on Hot Dogs
Plenty of people like ketchup on their hot dogs, and it’s usually available when you buy one. However, there are also plenty of people who think ketchup ruins a hot dog and should never be put on one.
Raisins in Cakes or Bread
Among those who don’t like this, there are many who actually do like raising. They just don’t like the effect raisins have on the flavor and texture of these foods.
Foie Gras
French for “fat liver,” this popular food considered a delicacy is made from the liver of a duck or goose. Many people object to it because the duck or goose is force-fed in order to produce that “fat liver,” which those people see as animal cruelty.
Overcooking Steak
There are many people who will say that cooking a steak past medium is ruining it and that the cow deserved a better fate. Of course, there are also many who like their steak medium-well and well-done.
Shaming People for Enjoying Food the Way They Like It
Finally, there are a lot of people who list food shaming as among the great food crimes. Their point is that if it isn’t causing you harm, why do you care? Fair point even if pointing out food crimes can be a little fun!
