How delicious do these Hot Cocoa Donuts look? They are perfectly light, sweet, and loaded with a rich chocolate glaze. Make some hot chocolate and dunk and dip these babies right in. These easy baked donuts are the perfect way to warm up this fall and winter. Top them with these adorable mini marshmallows for a festive touch.
I love making donuts, and these Gluten Free Krispy Kreme Donuts are the most popular recipe on my site. Readers also love my Gluten Free Apple Cider Donuts and my Gluten Free Pumpkin Donuts.
A holiday breakfast buffet is not the same without something sweet like this! Sure the savory casseroles are popular but we need a treat too.
Ingredients
The ingredients are simple and easy - you may have them ready to go in your pantry right now.
- Flour - Any all-purpose flour will do. I have also made these gluten-free with Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1 Gluten-Free Flour.
- Baking Soda and Baking Powder - These will help the donuts rise and make them perfectly light and airy.
- Hot Cocoa Mix - Use any favorite brand here; it really adds some delicious flavor.
- Eggs - Eggs provide structure - room temperature is best.
- Vanilla - Pure vanilla adds a delicious flavor.
- Butter - Room temperature butter is best; I used unsalted butter.
- Sugar - The perfect amount of sweetness to take these over the top.
- Chocolate Milk - Why not use chocolate milk for some extra chocolatey goodness?
- Chocolate Chips - I used milk chocolate to go with the hot chocolate flavor but you can use dark chocolate as well.
- Heavy Cream - This makes the glaze just perfect.
- Dehydrated Marshmallows - Dehydrated marshmallows are marshmallows that have been dried until they are firm and crunchy. The perfect topper!
Instructions
These are simple and easy to make in just a few steps. You will need a donut pan. I like this one from Amazon.
- Step 1: Start by whisking together your flour, baking soda, baking powder and cocoa mix together.
- Step 2: In a separate bowl, cream together your butter and sugar, add in your eggs and vanilla.
- Step 3: Beat until well combined.
- Step 4: Start adding your wet ingredients to your dry ingredients. Followed by your chocolate milk. Mix until all ingredients are added together and well combined.
- Step 5: Pour batter into a piping bag, cut off the top. Spray your donut pan with your cooking spray, and pipe batter into each well.
- Step 6: Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Don’t overbake, they will be dry! Let cool.
- Step 7: Place your chocolate chips and heavy cream in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in one mine intervals, stirring after each, until melted and smooth.
- Step 8: Pour into a piping bag and pipe onto the top of each cooled donut. Top with dehydrated marshmallows.
Substitutions
- If you want to make these gluten free, as I mentioned, it is easy to use Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1 Gluten Free Flour or Cup 4 Cup Gluten Free Flour. Both work well. Make sure your hot cocoa and chocolate chips are also gluten free.
- If you want to make this dairy free, use all plant-based milks, butter, and chocolate chips. Dairy free milks can be a bit tricky and I have not tried it in this recipe.
Variations
- If you prefer white chocolate chips, you can make the glaze with white chocolate chips and then top with mini chocolate chips.
- If you have a donut hole pan you can make donut holes and dip into the glaze or roll in powdered sugar.
Equipment
You will need a ziptop bag or a piping bag for putting the donut batter in the pan and also glazing the donuts. You will also need a donut pan.
Top tip
Store these for up to five days in an airtight container on the counter. You can also freeze them for up to a month without the frosting then glaze right before serving.
